What is an RDS CAL?

A Remote Desktop Services Client Access Licence (RDS CAL) gives one user or one device the right to connect to Windows Server through Remote Desktop Services, for example to use published desktops or RemoteApp programs from a terminal server. RDS CALs are added on top of the normal Windows Server CAL: anyone using remote desktop needs both.

Which licences does a remote desktop setup need?

RDS CAL packs do not include the server licence or the standard Windows Server CALs. Contact us if you also need standard CALs.

Device CALs or User CALs?

The packs on this page are Device CALs: each licence is assigned to a computer or thin client, and anyone can use that device. They are the better choice when several people share the same machines, such as shift workers, call centres or classrooms.

User CALs are assigned to a person, who can then connect from any number of devices. They suit staff who work from a laptop, a desktop and a phone. If User CALs fit you better, ask us.

Choose the RDS CAL version that matches your server

Microsoft's rule: newer RDS CALs can be used to access older servers, but older RDS CALs cannot access newer servers. So 2025 RDS CALs work with 2025, 2022 and 2019 hosts, while 2019 RDS CALs work only with 2019 and earlier. The RD licence server must also run the same Windows Server version as the CALs or later. How to install RDS CALs

• Your RDS CAL key is emailed immediately after payment.
• Install the CALs on your RD licence server with Remote Desktop Licensing Manager, and set your deployment's licensing mode to Per Device.
• If activation fails, our support team will help you resolve it or replace the key.

RDS CAL FAQ

Do I need a Windows Server CAL as well as an RDS CAL?

Yes. An RDS CAL is additive: each user or device using remote desktop needs a standard Windows Server CAL and an RDS CAL.

Do RDS CALs include Windows Server?

No. You need a separate Windows Server licence for the server itself.

How many RDS CALs do I need?

With Device CALs, one per device that connects to the remote desktop server. A pack of 50 covers up to 50 devices.

Can 2025 RDS CALs be used with a 2022 or 2019 server?

Yes. Newer RDS CALs cover older session hosts. The reverse does not work: 2019 or 2022 RDS CALs cannot be used to access a 2025 server.

Is there a grace period before RDS CALs are required?

Yes. A new RDS deployment works for 120 days without a licence server. After that, every client needs a valid RDS CAL to sign in.
